Activity Report of the Sunday School For the Year 2006-2007

Submitted to Malankara Orthodox Sunday School of the N. American Diocese. Southern Region Coordinator, Mr. Alex Alexander on September 10, 2007

The Sunday School for the year 2007 -08 started on August 5th 2006 and ended on April 28th 2007 with a total of 36 Sundays. During the report year, we conducted our classes every Sunday after the Holy Communion. However this interfered with various after church activities. To overcome this hurdle, we have changed our school hours to every Sunday From 8.45 AM to 9.45 A.M. except for School Annual day, Church Perunnal and Easter.

Our Sunday School has classes from Kindergarten through 12th Grade. We strictly follow the Southern Region Area II syllabus, class and test schedule. We are glad to report that our teachers take their work seriously to make all students understand the orthodox faith and make them committed towards their ancestral church, so that the light from St. Thomas is passed on to the generations to come in N. America. We have a good network of committed substitute teachers to make sure that no class is left without a teacher.

We were not able to conduct Sunday School during the month of September 2006 as our church was flooded due to a plumbing failure. However, with the combined efforts of our teachers and parents, we are able to cover all syllabus in time and I am proud to report that all students passed their mid term and final exams as per Area II guidelines.

Our students participated in Southern Region District Competitions held at St. Thomas Church Dallas and we ended in the fifth place overall with three first places, three second places and two third places. We are committed towards increasing our participation in coming years. Every year, we celebrate on Christmas Eve and our teachers distribute gifts and prizes to our students at the Christmas program. We also give awards for perfect attendance and best achievements. For an ever-rolling trophy, students and teachers select the best student every year.

We conducted our OVBS this year in July 07 and it ended with a spectacular rally. This years OVBS was coordinated by our MGOCSM members. Our special thanks to Shirley Kunnel, Julia Samuel, Betsy Thomas and Deepa Yohannan for making it a grand success with all 34 Sunday school students participating in the three day event.  We appreciate their remarkable planning and coordinated efforts to make it a big success. We also attended the Southern Regional Family/ Youth Conference at St’ Andrews United Methodist Church in Plano, TX. We are planning to conduct our Sunday School annual day for this year on October 7th 2007 with the presence of H.G. Dr. Zachariahs Mar Theophilos.

After four years of excellent leadership, Mr. Thomas Kalayilparampil stepped down as our Sunday School Principal. His tenure during 2003-07 will always be remembered as the revival period of St. Thomas Sunday School in Oklahoma.  His contributions will always be appreciated with great gratitude and his continuing cooperation with Sunday School is our strength. We thank him for it. Tom Zachariah has took over as the new Principal for the academic year 2007-2008 with assistance from Mr. Thomas Peter.

Last academic year was quite remarkable in all aspects and we appreciate all our teachers, students and parents for their hard work. I take this opportunity to thank our Vicar Fr. Cherian Kunnel for his invaluable guidance and support to our Sunday School. Achen is the pillar of our small church and always reminds us about the importance of enriching our kids about orthodoxy. We thank our managing committee and members of our church for their support and cooperation. Our special thanks goes to the Diocesan Bishops and the Area II Sunday School officials for their guidance and support.

Above all, we want to thank the Almighty God for his immense grace and abundant mercy during this academic year.
